Just got confirmation that I'm in the Origins Closed Alpha for Star Wars Battlefront. Sweet!
I figured I had a good chance of being accepted (I have an obnoxious amount of hours logged in BF3 and BF4 plus I've been in a multitude of their betas)
I'll be sure to let you guys know my thoughts once I actually download and play it.
I confess I'm nervous. The previous Battlefield entries leave much to be desired and I skipped Battlefield Hardlines completely because every iteration of DICE's engine caters more and more to young kids and twitch shooting which I have little skill or interest in. I prefer tactical planning and execution. I dearly love Star Wars though so hoping for the best and fearing the worst... please DICE/EA don't frack this up!

These were not the droids I was looking for I wish I could say I fell in love with it and TBH I really only did try for a few games and of course it is an ALPHA, but every indication to me this is just going to devolve into another dumbed down twitch shooter. The sounds, character models and even level design were beautiful. It really does feel like you are fighting in the trenches of Hoth as AT-ATs encroach on the Rebel Base. Sadly though the first day of the Alpha and already kids are killing you across the map or jumping and 360-noscope yolo headshots. It was hard to pull off flanks (though I did including a brutal flank as a snowtrooper into the hanger bays of the Rebel Base) There are a variety of pickups that appear allowing you to temporarily switch to commanding an AT-ST, Tie Fighter/X-Wing, Snowspeeder or even control the mighty AT-ATs head cannons for a while, but all of these are paper tigers and easily countered by a plethora of enemy weapons. Heck you can even damage vehicles with your blaster. 3 or 4 "clips" of blaster fire will destroy most vehicles so a few people pointing at an enemy and *pop* down he goes. I presume that in the final release you can accumulate enough kills or points or whatever to temporarily transform into an iconic character like Luke, Vader or Boba Fett. Not sure how that would play out. There were no squads only a buddy system where you were randomly paired up with someone else and could spawn near them. There was a tiny text chat box, but couldn't figure out any kind of mic system. Maybe that will be added later. Honestly though this is faster paced than BF4 so I don't see the point. By the time you formulated a plan the action will have flowed somewhere else. Just too chaotic for my tastes. I think the under 20 crowd will enjoy it. Meh I'll stick to stealth FPS/RPG games where I can use strategy, planning and control the pace a little more. The best thing I can say about the alpha is at least now I don't have to spend $50-60 to figure out I won't like it.
