Haha that was a fun read. I love Chris stories He's been a big supported at PC Gamer for my other mods. He's a really creative guy - although I don't think I would have tried THAT playthrough LOL. Not enough exploration for me! It does highlight though that game is geared towards pretty set activities and mannerisms and trying to play any other way doesn't really work out too well. I hope we see a massive overhaul in the roleplaying aspect of the game so you can actually play kooky characters who are not necessarily action heroes. Right now my game consists of find the place, kill the raiders/synths/super mutants, loot the place and then find the next place and repeat. It's a bit stale TBH. I do appreciate the detail and creativity of the level designs, but when I'm not on a main mission it's all very same-old, same-old. Hell even when I AM on a main mission it can be the same (just completed Kellogg last night and it's essentially pretty much that same forumla with a cutscene thrown in - at least the first part of tracking him was interesting and different...) I suppose in one way Far Cry shines a bit over Fallout because while it lacks the depth of the locations at least there is *some* variety for player activity in the way of climbing radio towers, searching for the hidden yalung masks, etc. It's not strictly outposts filled with baddies. I know skyrim had a ton of mods that added things like collectible cards, treasure maps and completely new quests so I'm hoping modding will really step up and offer us some cool alternative things we can do besides just wasteland dungeon delving. And like I said some depth to the current systems like more actual player homes to buy & decorate (not just settlements), improved economics and inter-settlement activities (maybe delivery missions ala The Postman), ability to establish new bases anywhere (this is already being attempted) and the like.

I also am finding the current play-through a bit same-ole, same-ole as I level up. I haven't moved on with the main quest beyond rescuing Valentine, and the Minutemen quests have started to repeat - so time to move on with another faction - think I'll try the Railroad first, for the extra crafting capabilities as well as the cool silent weapon which becomes available.
I had my first pre-set/cut-scene mini-boss fight (clear a location at the request of a named settlement) and just hated it!! No options really in how to battle out of it, and it's just down right boring. But I suppose they created them so you use VATS or get cem'd up.
The free-roaming clearing of locations at least allows me to engage with my strengths and enjoy the challenge of setting up my tactics of choice.

Yes, the minutemen quests are awfully repetetive. Playing them is more the work of a public accountant, because in the later phases you just travel from settlement to settlement, plant a few plants, build a few beds, look what they have accumulated and travel to the next. Then you bring it all home and craft adhesive. Then comes along Preston and alway tells you the same story, that a settlement...
On the other hand, as soon as you get artillery..... well thats another story...

More than anything else..................I wish the terrain/buildings etc; were more destructible; like in the Battlefield/Frostbite 2 engine series. With persistent objects; that don't suffer any real damage............mini nukes are kind of a joke once the pretty flames and mushroom cloud dissipate. I'm hooked up with the rail road right now; on my first (intended) play through to whatever ending I get. Supposedly the BoS, and the Institute will be on my ***; but the BoS still allies with me during anti gang (super mutants, gunners, raiders etc) engagements, and the Institute hasn't meaningfully retaliated/attacked despite numerous ops against them by me. meh!

Railroad: That might be the most interesting quest arc. Brotherhood is pure military gung ho, and I did enough of that in RL.

I think Jeff setting up his base at Red Rocket makes sense in regards to getting away from Preston, as well as the others never ending dialogs ... I think I'll be moving there soon ...
On my own I want to set up the trade routes to support my exploring, and will get Rank 2 of local leader in order to support creating a major base in each of the zones.
Just luv the repeating of words "nearby settlement" when in fact they are clear across the map!!

I think Jeff setting up his base at Red Rocket makes sense in regards to getting away from Preston, as well as the others never ending dialogs ... I think I'll be moving there soon ... ^ This. So much this. "Hey watcha doin' there?", "What are you making?", "What are you working on?", "What..." OMG SHUT UP and head to Sanctuary so I can think for a while! Cripes companion do you not understand I have a metric TON of crap I just lugged back from ABANDONED LOCATION #37 that I have to sort it all into 20 different containers so it doesn't randomly disappear the next time we go out? And THEN I need to check all the upgrades on my weapons and armor and see if I have enough screws to bolt a new bit or piece on something or other. But hey if you're not too busy please stand RIGHT in front of me while I try to use this machine. Multiply this by about 10 when in an actual settlement - "I'm sooo hungry". Really? Because I just stocked like 30 melons in the workbench. Do you want me to get you one, a fork and white dinner plate and cut it up for you? Maybe we can whip up a pie for Mama Murphy because she sure as shit ain't getting outta that chair to serve herself.

Mama Murphy ain't gettin' no free meal ... got her off the chem's right away and working the fields. No chair for her, but her repeated patterns are just as bad ...
Clearly some of the dialog is aimed towards impacting your relationship with your companion, and that's one decision I made very early, no companion(s) outside any forced by a specific quest.
Yeah, repeatedly those "what're you making?", are met with "Gawd only knows!"

I haven't done any settlement building; I got completely worn out on that playing State of Decay. As soon as I completed the First "Save the Minutemen" mission I left those whiny, sniveling so and sos in Sanctuary; never to be seen by Flanker again! I did have to install two (count'em two!--man; I got blisters from that ****!) MG emplacements to secure a RR safe house, and subsequently build a lavish and impressive transporter beam (Fire her up, Scotty! eeeeerrrrr; I mean Tinker Tom) at the same location as part of the "get to the Institute/segue into the RR missions thing. 'Nuff of that, for me! Companions? Please! After spending at least 15 minutes putting up with that obnoxious **** in FNV & SR..........I certainly haven't fallen afoul of it in F4! "I could go with ya!" NO, you CAN'T............I can block all the doorways, and other tight spots on my own, thank you!! Excepting the mandatory "take the noisy bleeping dog with you" find Kellogg thing. I fired his hairy, barking *** immediately upon completion! No dog treats for him either! Beat it, loser!

Settlement building at this point is just enough to get by (i.e., fencing/turrets), and to store stuff collected in the neighborhood. One lesson learned was that for those pre-set named settlements (especially with named NPCs) - leave them alone as for assignments, and just add the extra beds, water, etc if you add folks for other duties.
Learned my lesson with the first RR escort mission - NPCs aren't programmed to follow your style of play!! As often as not, my plan of "let's go AROUND that stronghold" is met by the NPC charging right into it, gunning away ... geeezzz!!! So now it's a case of I'll clear the stronghold(s) which will be in the return path prior to commencing the actual escort part of the quest.
