So! Anyone popped the bucks on The Division yet? Taken it for a test drive...................to save the rest of us the potential anguish?

I tried the demo and was pleasantly surprised to find it was better than I had feared. I wouldn't pay $60 for it and it IS a MMO based game with cooldowns, insanely large damage models (seriously it takes nearly a whole clip to kill a bad guy), loot drops and so on. Not really a great single player experience although I feel like the story is decent enough with good voice acting, animation, etc. it's just the MMO thing turns me off.
Mechanics wise it is much more action oriented than I thought and you can make good use of cover, popping out to fire, headshots and so on. That damage though ugh. Having to spray someone down with a full clip from an assault rifle is kinda dumb... and I can tell it gets worse as you rank up with "heavier" and heavier enemies (i.e. giant bullet sponges). I would say if you can play with friends it's probably fun, but I do love my single player ventures (as do we all) so yeah.
*Maybe* I'll purchase it when it comes down. Not sure. I do love Tom Clancy and modern shooters. Just don't like the model they chose for this too much.
I would say as always do some more youtube viewing, read reviews, etc.
Maybe someone else has more time in it and can offer better opinions? (I did only put half a day or so into the open beta test)

I have watched a number of videos. The two things that stuck with me were all the crap on the player HUD (think Far Cry 4 vanilla HUD amped up), and the lousy weapon damage. In particular; I twice noticed the player taking two solid headshots with an M1A1/M14 at close range to put the opponent down. All I can say is they must have been a bad*** bandanna and baseball cap the two enemy wear wearing! Your take on the demo reinforces my video views...................guess I'll continue waiting to see if there are going to be any SP mods at all (at least to correct weapon performance and the gosh awful HUD salad). As usual; for Ubi, the game world did look great................oh well!

Well the HUD thing I can say is pretty customizable including turning elements off. I was impressed at the HUD options actually and they even let you move pieces around so good possibility you could prune that down to taste The damage thing though might be a bitter pill to swallow. Early on it's not too horrible (just very very silly as you point out - these guys are thugs in hoodies and baseball caps!?), but it's clear this gets more and more out of hand because the preview videos show "cleaner" crews in hazmat getups, private military contractors, escaped prisoners, etc. etc. so in true MMO / RPG fashion I'm sure it just scales up silly high. Dunno if this would ever be moddable though because it's always online and unlike say Far Cry where it's just a check for new patches or content this is actually first and foremost a multiplayer game that can be attempted solo. There's also technically no jump mechanic nor stealth which kind of bugs me. You can clamber over objects / jump down from heights (with fall damage of course!) but it's odd to be so rooted to the ground. Moving from cover to cover works good though. Closing cars doors is a neat gimmick the first 10 times, but it has zero usefulness - you cannot use them for cover (or even reopen them so not sure what the point is other than to look kewl). The only thing you can do with stealth is approach within a certain radius of enemies and then trigger an ambush attack by throwing a grenade, tossing down a gun turret or activating some other kind of power or ability. I missed my stealth kills from Far Cry No silent sniper, bow or knife kills

Kinda sad..................I was a huge fan of the first three Rainbow Six games (back when Redstorm Ent was their own master). Very unforgiving damage modeling, that placed a premium on proper tactical deployment and engagement................and no one even knew what "leveling up" was! As serious as the gameplay/gunfighting looks in TD.............................if Ubi made the nades into clucking chickens..................they wouldn't be terribly out of place!

I also enjoyed the H*ll out of the Rainbow Six games when they were under the Redstorm label. Simply luv'd setting up different teams mixed with different tactics!

OMG!!!! I didn't think there was anyone as cynical, jaded, and tired of lame *** game stories, ****** features, and inconsistent physics, story elements as me. It's good to be wrong! It's been taking a beating in the comments over at IGN too. My favorite was the poster who said the Dark Zone should be called the Rectum Zone because everyone in it was an ***hole (that's a short version paraphrase on my part)! I've never subscribed to anyone's channel at Youtube; but I made an exception for the guy/s who did this review. Thanks for posting it!
