I saw JR's comment in another thread on picking up a copy of this the other day. Did some online reading and reviewing; it's getting very mixed reviews. The main complaints seem to be performance issues on consoles; with some of the same on PC. Then there's the usual is it any good (as a game) arguing on all platforms. Sssssooooooo................I bought a copy off Steam.
It's very similar to the FarCry series in many respects. It IS NOT open world; contrary to PR claims. Semi open world would be much more accurate. The game is predicated on the absolutely ludicrous story line that the US has been occupied by the technological and very wealthy power house N. Korea. The game world is Philadelphia, PA, or what's left of it. It's semi open world as when you complete enough level objectives to open up the next level...............it opens. The game runs on the Cry Engine and looks and runs great on my rig (specs below) with GFX maxed. It sounds good too! I HAVE NOT experienced any of the reported tech issues noted in the various HTR forums. Your character must fire up the resistance and save Philly!
Weapons handling is good, and sounds are better (even the suppressors are better than the usual ppphhttt ppphhhttt suppressor game sound). There's quite a bit of weapon customization available, though as usual................even though you're fighting for and saving your country one block at a time.............you have to collect shit to sell so you can pay for saving your country! Game Script Writers......................what can you say; a very calcified class of authors indeed. A bright spot is the weapon accessories you purchased may be used on any of the weapons you own because the game actually features a realistic rail system! Buy the ACOG once, and use it on any weapon you want (the game even lets you use accessories on two weapons at the same time!). Weapons, gear, accessories are expensive, and it takes a while to earn the cash. Each weapon can be converted into one or more variants e.g. pump shotgun->auto shottie->incindiary firing shottie. NOTE: The vanilla pump shottie is AWESOME! Tight spread, realistic range, and lot's of power! There is a lot of stupid game weapon cliches to put up with though. Increased firing rate = less power even though it's the same weapon/cartridge combo. Suppressors reduce range and power. And.......................my favorite: muzzle brakes INCREASE recoil! Bleep me! I know some of you are overly fond of bows, arrows, and sharp sticks.......HTR has those (crossbow really) too. There are four different kinds of throwable/placeable incindiarys and explosives; including remote detonated, AND! RC car variants you can drive into or under the bad guys (as you [well...........me anyway] yell our your favorite adolescent epithet!)
BTW: On the realistic front.........................ONLY two weapons allowed! One small; one large! Suck it, dude! Speaking of realistic (well sort of)...................you are quite fragile! There are health syringes, and your health regens VERY slowly, but Rambo **** will kill you quick!
AI is average; there is quite a bit of it in game, so the world feels populated (you can coopt one friendly AI fighter to go with you, but you can't give them any commands; other than don't follow me anymore---MEH!). Level design is good; looks realistic to me, and features quite a bit of verticallity so you can "do stuff". Red Zones are shoot the good guys on sight areas, yellow zones allow you to wander around as long as you keep weapons holstered, and don't get to close to the NORKs, or their surveillance devices. Wanna start some ****? Pull out your weapon, or get too close to the NORKs, and IT'S ON now bub! If you break line of sight, you can hide in a dumpster!, or safe house until things cool down. Taking over sub areas within a game level can lead to hilarious (still not sure if the Devs intended it that way) circumstances. i.e. You and your crew of good guys in your newly captured area looking ACROSS THE STREET at rabidly hostile NORKs in their area; with no one getting riled up or shooting at each other. Fire fights break out all the time in red zones, and can become moderate in size, and are one of my favorite aspects of the game. Lots of side missions, and plentiful (sometimes TOO much) radio chatter and cell phone comms (why the **** do radios and cell phones work when the NORKs turned the tech back doors off?! LOL! Remember what I said about game script writers?)
The game does not appear to support mods or modders at this time. So if there is something you REALLY don't like.......................you're stuck with it. Flanker's take: 6 outta 10
Good game world, game play, guns, and sounds.
Lot's of fire fights, sabotage, and "stuff" to do
Decent SP campaign length + 6 small coop maps (not sure about MP because I never pay any attention to it).
NO crafting or leveling up!
Dorky game cliches in story and weapon accessories
STUPID story
NO mods!
My Specs:
Win 10 Home 64 bit
Intel i7 5820K (very mild OC)
X99 chipset
256 GB SSD OS drive
1TB SATA 300 HDD storage drive
16 GB DDR4 2600 RAM
GTX 980 Ti (very mild OC)
Creative USB analog sound card into 5 spkr home theater
UPDATE: Made it to the third level............third weapon now----wanna be RPG. Enemies all more heavily armored, weapon damage upgrades now available (for more money), more enemies and surveillance in general.
BTW: You can skulk, sneak, and ambush on any of the levels if that's your thing, or just kick in the door and take your chances! DDOOHH!!
