Yeah they are emphasizing open world. In Hays also kind of let slip in one interview that there won't be the traditional "north" and "south" areas, but rather they will start the character roughly in the center of the map and let us go any direction.
I have a strong sense they are going to handle this in GRW fashion with various parts of the map being governed by different mini-bosses (aka members of the family). Once you kill enough of them it will trigger a contact from the Father and so on until you've cleared most of the map and unlock the "final showdown". They have teased that the Father will have more of a presence then previous enemies (though I'm dubious... I expect only a handful of cutscenes after the initial one 2-3 at most... there's only so many times you can sucker punch the hero and have the bad guy prance around him pontificating about his masterplan. Still it will likely be better than a couple of phone calls from Pagan Min)
In regards to the towers - I actually never minded the tower puzzles. Sort of enjoyed them to be truthful. I realize they are overused in Ubi games, but it never bothered me. I was a bit sad that Ubi caved to pressure and let you land the gyrocopters on them in 4. I always enjoyed the circling swooping animation to highlight points of interest nearby. I do agree though that having everything shown on the minimap took away from exploration. It just made you beeline straight to everything. This being Ubi though I still bet dollars to donuts collectables and such will appear on the world map (then again this is the first time the world map is a rendered 3D map you can rotate so maybe it won't be that simple for them to sprinkle icons all over it)
