Given my late start I'm planning on doing my first time thru a bit differently - going to determine how exactly player re-spawning works when you save, then do re-loads to have that nailed. Afterwards going to experiment with different priorities with-in the game as I free-roam. As it was with FC3, my buddies will just have to wait a bit, or awhile, as the case my be ...
One quick observation from Dutch's island - my GFH (got to figure out how to ditch him) and a Peggie ran right by each other as the GFH was moving to keep up as I was re-positioning, and the Peggie was moving to my last known position. Neither apparently noticed the other. That's quite a concept ...

Playing with trackpad makes me sweat quite often.. XD And I thought flying with a KB/M was manly (and very poorly done in my case)! Hey, MW! Open up your journal; I think it's the third icon from the L at the top; it'll bring up a list of specialist and soldier henchpeople. The one/s that's tagging along with you should have a check in their box, uncheck it and they'll go do whatever NPCs do when their not messing with us.

Thanks Flanker. Once done with the tutorial did figure out that whoever you had tagging along needed to be "removed" by clicking on the highlighted box. I discovered that when you pick up a random GFH it's truly random, and they apparently aren't available again upon demand. They may of course show at some other point in game play, but there's no "database" to draw upon. I won't be using GFH in any case, but had assumed these NPCs were available to you once they are "discovered".
I'm hoping that some of the later weapons which unlock for purchase upon reaching specific resistance levels are in fact in the game world as you explore further from Dutch's island. I really hate playing with purchasing being your only option for any beyond the first level of game play. However right now that's the plan - play with what the game world provides and see what happens. Have discovered that apparently armor vests don't respawn for example.

Just like every other Far Cry game the enemies carry the same basic sets of weapons so the vast majority of weapons can only be purchased. There are a few (very few) places where things like the .44 and the M-72, etc. appear but there were many weapons which I never found in free roam.
I will say though that the weapons are all fairly universally good and you don't necessarily need anything different - just customize the weapons you have access to. Only the sniper is really the only thing you'll feel pressure to upgrade (since the ACR sniper version is fairly shite - I dumped it for the .308 hunting rifle and later for a .50 cal)
Pretty much the entire game for me was bow - sniper - rocket launcher - pistol (usually suppressed M1911, but sometimes switched it out for a revolver, smg or M-72 as desired)

Thanks JR; just got the 3rd holster, so now have some options. Started as pure stealth with bow/suppressed .45 as I built up perks. Found naturally the nearby NPC re-spawning locations, so that made completing a few "challenges" much easier.

I recommend picking up ANY weapon you encounter that you haven't already UNLOCKED. If you don't want the "pick up" right then, just pick "your" weapon you've just discarded back up.
Picking up any unlocked weapon unlocks it right then for purchase; regardless of your overall resistance level, which normally determines which weapons are unlocked or not. I got my "fav"; the M60 quite early in the game this way.

Not only am I picking up, to unlock them, any weapon not already available, am taking notes as to the specific location. Did the same in FC4, and for items the same for FC3.
Will keep an eye out for my first encounter of a "heavy". Already came across the snipers and his/her wacked-out follower.
