Better than Far Cry 5, but not as good as the others

So I decided to give New Dawn a shot. Anyone else try it yet?
In my opinion it plays out better than FC5 (no more kidnappings and you can even skip through all the dialog and cut scenes - a Far Cry first!), but it's still a "Far Cry" (sic) than the older games (2/3/4)
For one thing it's not terribly long unless you drag it out. Fortunately you can control when you want to push the story forward, but this leads to some very weird storytelling at times ("we're gonna burn your base to the ground! ... just let us know when you want us to do that ok?"). Still it's much better than 5 was about dragging you through the campaign too quickly.
The health bars and weapon levels takes a bit of getting used to. I have mixed opinions on those. On the one hand it makes bullet sponge enemies very common and obvious right from the beginning of the game... on the other hand it gives some kind of balance to the weapons unlike FC5 where every weapon was basically a copy of every other weapon. The weapons all look very cool to me as well. I like the junkyard look to all of them.
The setting is well done. Even the colorful flowers don't bother me very much. They did a really good job in making a post apocalyptic Hope County. It has a kind of overgrown feel like the movie "I Am Legend" where the city is overgrown with wildlife running through it. It's actually very cool in my opinion.
The characters are unfortunately rather meh. The Highwaymen are nothing more than reskinned Pirates from FC3 and the evil Twins are kind of annoying in an eye rolling fashion. They don't come off as sinister, but rather very bland and obvious in their motives and mannerisms. The game tries to come off as a spiritual successor to Far Cry 3, but it fails miserably. I don't think anyone has noticed or mentioned, but the Highwaymen use an eye symbol on their flags and gear that's very reminiscent of the Pirates from Rook Island. Also your initial introduction is VERY similar to Jason's beginning experience with Vaas and the Pirates. The Highwaymen even listen to some songs that sound a lot like the music from Far Cry 3 (though it may be they used the same musicians - again that might be calculated).
The NPCs similarly aren't very fleshed out. I'm glad not everyone died from the last game, but tbh I wasn't terribly emotionally invested in them in FC5 and even less so now. The new NPCs are mostly TERRIBLE. They have incredibly dumb and annoying voice lines. Only a handful are tolerable. Ubisoft really is lacking in the writing department.
Overall I think it's worth playing but I do regret not waiting for it to hit around a $20.00 price point. I feel like Primal and New Dawn are on about the same level in terms of content and value (though both offer completely different and unique play experiences).
What do you guys think?
