I'm a huge fan of "invasion America" type settings. Loved the movie Red Dawn in the 80s. Played WAY more Fortress America than I did Axis & Allies (and I played an unhealthy amount of that boardgame as well). So when the original Homefront PC game came out I was an easy sell.
Homefront wasn't the best game I ever played (far from it), but it wasn't a *bad* game either. In fact the graphics and core gameplay hold up pretty good even today. The story was solid (if short) and it hit all the tick marks it needed to. It definitely could have used some more love and polish, but my understanding was it went through development hell so the fact that it became a finished game at all is probably a miracle.
When I saw the trailer below though I got VERY excited. Not just because A) it's that genre or B) it's a Homefront sequel. Nope. Watch the footage and tell me if you notice anything about the UI - the minimap, weapons wheel, ammo counter, throwables, cover peek, etc. etc. Even watch at the end what happens after they capture the radio tower errr "communications relay".
They can say this is the CryEngine, but tell me this doesn't feel like they are using the Dunia branch for this game:

looks very familiar, love the hand shake after the syringe shot, and the flying drone kinda reminds me of an upgraded version of the drone that was in the half life series, lots of blood and the shotgun is to die for, pun intended, i'am sold. wonder if it will be DX12
edit forgot to add that it would be nice if they will have way to turn off the gold star over people and destinations and just have it on the mini map

Which Fortess America version do you have, the one with Saddam on the cover or the later edition? I had Saddam - before they painted over his face LOL, but time (and moisture) destroyed the box. I kept the pieces though and currently it's all boxed up in a plain cardboard box somewhere out in the garage. I've been thinking about buying the newest re-re-release of it and introducing the game to the boy child. Not sure if he would like it or not... or I could just dust off the original and show him, but I heard they altered the city layouts slightly to make it more balanced. There was a time as a young man that I knew exactly how to place the laser sats and vehicles as the U.S. to maximize your chances and as long as the dice held out I would inevitably win as the U.S. Likewise I was pretty brutal as the red invader and knew how to punch deep into the NorthEast and could advise Blue & Yellow what to do to insure victory. Haven't played it (Or Axis & Allies, Risk, etc.) for many many moons now. I miss that part of my misspent youth LOL.

Here's a video I found from a YouTuber that got to play a 30 minute demo of Homefront: the Revolution at a gaming convention. www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCpJsS9xckYNO new footage at all (it's just bits of the video I posted above over and over again), but the take aways from his commentary is: * It's open world with missions and side missions. * It plays almost exactly like Far Cry 4, but in an urban setting (yea!) * It's MUCH more punishing than FC4. Always feels like you are outgunned and overwhelmed. This sounds great, but we all know that studios often scale back the difficulty of games before release. Hopefully not in this case. * You clear out areas of the map to reduce enemy presence however you can never totally clear them out and patrols and snipers can spawn anywhere putting you in constant danger. Again this might change. * He said The urban setting (the occupied Korean "Red Zone") with it's brown and grey color palette was pretty bleak and overall pretty generic and forgettable. * There's crafting! The player has a "GTK" (Guerrilla Tool Kit) which is all of the molotovs, RC car bombs, hacking tools, etc. that you have to assemble from gathered items. This sounds more like it's Dying Light / Dead Island style crafting with chemicals, plastics, lighters, etc. * I noticed in the video that the shotgun had a generic name (pump action shotgun), but the ammo he was collecting for bodies was named after the caliber (9mm and 7.62mm) rather than the generic pistol ammo, rifle ammo, etc. So now I'm officially VERY interested in this game as well! I hope they keep a good difficult balance at release and have a lot of collecting and side mission stuff. One thing that I have felt was really positive about FC4 and Dying Light was the amount of side stuff you could do and the size of the world which kept the game interesting. I guess time will tell. Really happy that open world FPS games are starting to gain some ground.

Looks like a good game. Will have some time to myself and gaming when gkids go back to school this week later. Will keep Homefront: The Revolution in mind and think about it.

The best part of the game is when you are under pressure which is why I like the early parts of games so much because you are struggling to upgrade and deal with the environment. Far Cry 3 by the second island you are grossly overpowered (and FC4 you are almost ALWAYS grossly overpowered) There's a great video comparing and contrasting FC2 and FC4 and how you can change the entire feel of a game just by adjusting some of the games rules. I'll try to find a link. EDIT - here it isBut for example In FC2 if you clear the checkpoints they respawn which people found annoying, but in 3 and 4 you can completely eradicate the enemy presence around the outposts which makes those areas dull and uninteresting later.

I know your preference for FPS over third person and this game looks so similar to Far Cry (and Dying Light) in the way the character moves about and fights. May be a good fit although given the nature of the game it may be a lot more pew pew pew than stealth. Maybe not though as they show traps and cover, sneaking, etc.

I also have to agree, to the extent that it's almost like two different ways to enjoy the game(s) - you start off in a defensive mode, but then can switch over and play offensive. And naturally mods change the impact of those two approaches in any number of ways.

Previous post was meant as a Ditto entry. Would be cool for you to check out ease of altering Dying Light. I am really into the level of play. It is like an "Adult Game" if you get that. Not to demean youngsters, just that it takes serious commitment to achieve progress. Not too many needs evident, other than slightly faster equiptment changes, but am sure after a few playthrus, I will grow more critical, heh.
If nube to game Dying Light, like some prob are that read and don't join or post (please do, we don't bite much), you WILL gain the upper hand eventually, and pay attention to those skills gained, they are a must have and must use to progress properly. Nothing like jumping off a van and landing an axe into the head of a giant boss zombie you would previously avoid who you have weakened with molotovs and fuel containers, I made a 910 damage axe with various upgrades and mods which handles like a sword. Just really nice and rewarding. Big smile on that one. I know it is probably small time to some more advanced in game, but was a moment to remember for me.
Got a nice upgrade for a weapon from the building he burst out of after I killed his little brother. In lock box.
