EDIT - You can now preload Ghost Recon Wildlands through your Ubisoft launcher. This is a free 3 day open beta for anyone who wants to try out the game. It contains 2 of the 21 large areas in the game. Note that the download is a whopping 23.5 GB... >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Just a follow up to my prior post about Ghost Recon Wildlands being shown off at E3. I'm really excited and interested in this game as I think if done right it will be the perfect blend between the open world, stealth and outpost mechanics of the Far Cry series combined with the serious tone and modern military action of Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell series. Ubisoft has setup a website for it now at: www.ubisoft.com/en-US/game/ghost-recon-wildlands/Not much there yet except a fan kit with wallpapers, etc. and the same video they showed off at E3. Here is that E3 pre-alpha gameplay video and trailer again for anyone who is interested:

Coincidentally (I think not!) my PC Gamer magazine arrived yesterday and the very first article was a 2 page preview of the game from them where they got to play the demo shown off in the video. Although the article was interesting it naturally didn't have very much information. In addition the game is pre-alpha so it's not even a "real" game at this point more like an interactive tech demo.
Takeaways from the article were:
* The countryside was absolutely MASSIVE. Much larger than Far Cry 4's land mass (specifically the wording was "Suck it Far Cry 4"). More like the scale of the last Just Cause 2 game and upcoming Just Cause 3. The reviewer said he had no idea if they could actually pull this size area off and make it work in a final product, but it looked amazing and diverse from the air.
* There were a wide variety of terrain types including mountains, jungle, deserts, etc. The demo was a 4 man coop and each person started very far away in a completely different environment.
* In the coop demo they came together to take down the drug operation (no explanation HOW they came together - maybe they just chose the mission and it fast traveled them all together to the starting point). Apparently they started in or near a village and stole a helicopter from there. The article mentioned all kinds of vehicles being available to make off with and the wording made it sound a lot like Far Cry with jeeps, atvs, etc. just laying around for you to grab.
* Via the helicopter to the mission way point one of them bailed out and parachuted down to try and gain a position to scout from. Said the view from the helicopter and parachute was spectacular.
* The mission apparently was the one in the video and they took out a drug lab and captured the drug dealer. The big emphasis though seemed to be that you could approach the mission any way you wanted and the reviewer wondered if they were going to allow this much freedom in the final game and pull it all off so seemlessly. I really hope so as that is thing that MOST attracts my interest to games like this - a wide range of options and approaches.
* Although the demo was coop the reviewer couldn't help but wonder with the size of the area and how far they started out if Ubi would be able to bring people together easily and seamlessly for missions. There seemed like a lot of villages and landmarks calling out for exploration. Made it sound to me like at this early stage the game could be a stellar single player experience with the option for specific coop missions.
The last Splinter Cell game (Blacklist) works similar to this in that there are specific missions you can play single OR coop with one other person AND there are mission you can ONLY play coop. Those are all side missions though and not required. I am wondering if the campaign arc of GR Wildlands will REQUIRE coop. Also whether it's side missions or story missions will the game have any kind of AI to fill in so you can play single player (or less than 4 people) and if so will the AI be robust enough to be decent in play.
My dream game would be one where I could play single player with a decent AI for the other characters and the game allowed me to jump between them at any time so I could experience different aspects of the missions as I wanted. I think older Rainbow Six games worked in this way.
It would also be great in the open world game to play as different characters as well (GTA V style) and give us multiple characters to work on and level up.
* The reviewer noted an XP bar up in the corner and asked the devs about it. They were cagey about their answers saying it was too early to say for certain how leveling would work, but there would definitely be levels which unlocked skills and gear. They said each encounter though is about what gear you take and how you apply it more than having a specific weapon or skill.
* The devs also said they are planning on having dynamic weather and conditions so for example the AI will be less aware at night or in a storm. There will be elite soldiers who will have gear to circumvent some of this and you can also take gear to enhance situations like this (I assume things like nightvision goggles, etc)

Oh LOL it looks like they updated the website from when I looked at it the other night. Here is more info from the "key features" section (release date just says 2016):
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon® Wildlands is the very first military shooter in a massive, dangerous, and responsive open world that you can play entirely solo or in four-player co-op.
BIENVENIDOS A BOLIVIA From the infamous Death Road to the world’s largest salt flat, journey through Ubisoft’s largest open world action-adventure game to date. Discover massive regions inspired by Bolivia and South America, their stunning vistas and incredible diversity. Explore the hundreds of villages, landmarks, and legends populating this country in one of the many available vehicles, both on and off road, in the air, on land, and at sea. Immerse yourself in Bolivian culture as you cross paths with inhabitants reacting to their own agendas and to the game’s day-night cycle and weather system.
BECOME A GHOST Lead a team of four Ghosts, the absolute best of the US military. Play either solo or with up to three of your friends online in this gritty adventure as they seamlessly join you at any point in the game. Engage all your military missions in whatever order and manner suits you: stealth, distraction, and tactical or frontal assault always remain possible. Use the new iconic drones to recon the toughest terrains and to tag enemy outposts, or transform them into destructive weapons. Make difficult but critical choices: sabotage, interrogation, kidnapping, and assassination are but a few of the options available for you to reach your objectives. Upgrade and fully customize your Ghost with the experience and loot you gather on the battleground.
MANIPULATE AND FACE THE CONSEQUENCES Interact with different factions in the game: gather intel from the Santa Blanca cartel, bribe the aggressive Unidad military force, benefit from the local rebels’ resources, or protect the native population. Start inter-faction battles to cause distractions and help you reach your objectives. The world will react differently to each of your choices: unexpected opportunities and threats could arise from any situation, turning into long-lasting and dire consequences. Manipulate the system. Manipulate the unexpected.

More videos from people who got to try that pre-alpha demo.
Highlights:
* For now this is planned to allow OFFLINE SINGLE PLAYER play (YES!) I pray that is the case.
* Class-less progression. You can pursue any skill set with any special op. Does it make it sound like you have just one character though.
* Good AI for both friendly and enemy units.
* More talk about the HUGE world space. Helicopter ride took several minutes and they still hadn't hit the map edges.

New gameplay video for Ghost Recon Wildlands out of E3.
This is VERY scripted, but I'm loving how this looks and sounds so far. It looks like the dirty lovechild of Metal Gear Solid Phantom Pain and Far Cry 3 LOL:

Yup, so very much TOO scripted. Dialog also out of place; i.e., to much of just a group of guys out on a weekend run in the country ...
But it's just a demo in any event.

Yep agree Mike. Interestingly they allowed YouTubers to play this exact same mission at E3 and record it so there are quite a few "unscripted" run through of this as well - you can search YouTube for those. Interesting stuff. UNFORTUNATELY those run throughs look MUCH less polished and lots of bugs show up in them (flickering textures, AI oddness, physics glitches, etc. - all the typical things we would expect) also the graphics don't look nearly as pretty as all these showpieces they keep parading out (surprise surprise) or even as good as the video I posted above. Particularly the lighting. Still I feel like this is going to be a great title if it gets enough love from the devs. The playable demos though have me feeling like this is still a LONG way off for being ready for retail... hmmm

all for single player, took a look at it on steam a while back, got a warm and fuzzy feeling, agreed also hope that they take there time to polish it off (i don't mind the wait), and not just throw it out there like others and patch it on the go, definatley has a lot of potential
edit: just looked at steam and ,Available: Tuesday, March 07, 2017

With a fixed released date one can only hope they're on track for a finished game, and not a rush job to "finish it up".
Still hate all the on-screen HUD clutter that is the norm. Boy, for the good old days of Far Cry 2 ....

I enjoyed the first couple of GR games (back before you know who got a hold of the franchise and bleeped it up). I did play through GRAW when that was fresh...............I was impressed with the lethality of the weapons in contrast to most other Ubi "balanced for gameplay" guns. Keeping my eye on this and Watch Dogs 2 (anyone else watching that title?). I'm holding off on both GR and WD2 due to Ubi's penchant for releasing games that are actually BETA at best (needing 6-10 patches to fix), and their track record of not supporting mods or modders the last few years. Don't worry! When I get to be Dictator of the World.............................that **** will be changed! UPDATE: LOL! I watched the linked video after I'd posted. Console auto aim look badass on a play through, doesn't it? Game world did look great though (an Ubi strength); game world size and viewing distance reminded me of the original OpFlash and subsequent Armed Assault series (that's a good thing). ******* friendly/enemy diamonds and other stupid on screen ****; hope that can be turned off in options. I guess these SOF dudes never attended the "shoot the tires out" course for vehicle take downs! Preferring the pump 5000 rounds into the vehicle body, and hope for the best technique! Guess I need to get over to IGN and start tracking this one (although their site has been messed up for me lately; refusing to take track game and delete game inputs for a month or so now?)

I have so many fond memories of the original GR, with the two add-ons. That's in addition to enjoying a good number on player-developed maps. My rig couldn't handle GRAW upon release, so never have played that one, and by the time I got around to being forced to upgrade for non-gaming reasons, it was too many years down the road, and had discovered the Far Cry series in any event ...
