It looks like the editor's thumbnails are PNG's, stored in ingameeditor\thumbnails\pc. For example:

However, I haven't uncovered all thumbnail paths yet, and wonder how they are based on entries in the archetypes/object_inventory.
Based on the thumbnail image, it looks like the thumbnail picture for
either the
<Entry Id="FCC_Graphics:SinglePlayer:Generic:Props:Natural:Fire_Camp_01" Display="Fire Camp"/>
or
<Entry Id="FCC_Graphics:SinglePlayer:Generic:Props:Natural:Fire_Camp_01.Extinguished" Display="Fire Camp Extinguished" />
is:
"ige\ingameeditor\thumbnails\pc\14465362.png".

However, I am unable to find a pattern between object_inventory entries and the thumbnails. Possibly (though unlikely for Hash64?), the filename uncovered may also be a coincidental find, a hash collision. Any ideas? Far Cry 3 seems to have PNG thumbnail entries there as well, albeit renamed to *.xbt files.

Yea there is nothing special behind that

The names are correct, you can also create an own PNG in 800x800, save it i.e 999000000999.png and place it in the folder you mentioned above.
Now open the object_inventory.xml and add....
Thumbnail="999000000999"
...to the entry you want.
This is possible since FC3, but I was always too lacy (correct spelled?) for creating a thumbnail for each object.
But I am doing it allready for the Creator Update .... much work for some simple images for hundreds of objects. I hope the release will still be something special

Ah, nice! Though, not all objects seem to have a "Thumbnail" entry in the object_inventory, whilst there are many more thumbnails in the ige.dat. Any idea where such a mapping for the game's default objects is defined?

Yea I found it once, i think it was directly in a ark.xml file but i cant remember exactly...

However, adding <Thumbnail="123456789"> is easy enough for adding custom thumbnails.
