Oddly they called it "Sniper Ghost Warrior 3" for some reason...
Kidding aside I think if you want something to satisfy the Far Cry itch this year Sniper GW3 is as close as you will get.
PROS:
* Completely first person. No third person.
* Very Far Cryish animations. Driving, climbing, etc all very familiar.
* Open world game play.
* STRONG sniping mechanics especially on the higher difficulty levels. The harder game modes incorporate bullet drop, wind speed/direction, etc. and have you dialing in your elevation for shots. Well put together.
* Lots of weapons and accessories. You have to purchase what you unlock with cash (CON: some weapons like the AK you can pick up and it unlocks for you ARRRGGG devs stop doing that. PRO: you can break down enemy AKs into "mechanical parts" you can use in crafting)
* Decent enough crafting system.
* Ammo is sorted by caliber instead of generic AR, SMG, etc (whhhhaatttt?! ) They kind of lumped some guns together ignoring country based differences, but hey this is an improvement towards realism.
* You're a (mostly) lone wolf special operative destabilizing an oppressive regime (sound familiar?). It works though and the game is at it's best when you are taking down bases, checkpoints, patrols, etc.
* Very good difficulty levels. The medium one "hard" can be unforgiving if you try to play rambo. The hardest "realistic" mode seems nice and difficult (I scaled back from it until I play more - too brutal for my sensitive skin LOL)
* Day/Night cycle. You can sleep in the safe house and set the time to wake up. Haven't seen weather any changes yet. Dunno if it rains...
* HUD is not too cluttered and you can turn it off. FOV is of course kind of wacky and weapons are HUGE on screen especially the sniper rifles
CONS:
* The hero has good voice acting (is he Nomad from GRW? Not sure but I do recognize his voice from other games). He's kind of an ass though and his dialog is not stellar. Not horrible but just average. Other NPCs not so much. They're voice acting is average to subpar.
* The plot is pretty thin from what I've seen so far. The baddies are lame. Nowhere near any of the Far Cry games. It's playable, but it's just bland. Definitely better as an open world experience.
* Collectables and other grind available. It's not mandatory. I'm a completionist so I don't mind crap like that. Besides many of the collectables show up in your safe house - you even have a wall of weapons you collect (but you can't use them - WHYYYYY! Dammit ). I think the safe house looks cool.
* Buggy like all these games with the render distance sometimes removing people which is a sin in a long range sniping game. The AI sometimes gets stuck. I had 1 bad crash so far and got stuck in rocks once... it will probably iron out in a few weeks with patches.
* Magic injections for health. Better implemented though. There are pills, needles, and medkits. Each one heals a little more than the other with medkits doing full heal, but each takes longer to use. The medkit takes a couple of seconds while he wraps bandages around his arm, etc. No auto regen on hard and realistic (nice!)
* Not very many vehicles you can drive. You get a random car/truck and there are fast travel spots you can unlock. No quads and hang gliders sitting on every hill so you need to drive because walking is a chore. I would say it's not badly implemented though they could have added a *few* civilian cars here and there. There are sometimes locked vehicles as well, but you have to find the keys and usually it revolves around a mission requirement.
* Graphics are not stellar even on VERY HIGH settings, but they work well enough I suppose. Far Cry 3/4 looks better to my eyes. This game is darker and muddier. More STALKER than Far Cry. Your milage may vary.
Not a AAA game but a solid B-movie type title. I like it and as I say it's likely the closest thing to modern FPS game with open world we are going to get this year. As always check out some reviews, videos, etc. Wait for sales if that's your thing. I suspect reviewers are going to give it average and below average ratings, but I think it's better than that. Better than Home Front The Revolution in my opinion and that game wasn't horrible.
EDIT - here is a great video review. He had more technical problems on the PS4 than I did on the PC (my load times were long but nowhere near 5 minutes and I never had frame rate drops with my setup).
