I know there are some threads on this game already, but I was wondering whether anyone on here has any interest in trying to mod the game. I see Prey has been successfully modded, which is somewhat encouraging.
My efforts have been thwarted by the game's refusal to load files from outside the PAK archives and additionally the fact the xml files are all compiled and the BinXMLDecode utility doesn't work on them. Which is unfortunate.
The pak files can be successfully unpacked using this tool, however forum.xentax.com/viewtopic.php?p=129181#p129181 I've also managed to view the texture files using DDSUnsplit with a bit of renaming.
I feel the game has great modding potential. I'm particularly interested in creating resource scarcity, and fixing bugs. For example, there are these vent fan things that are supposedly only destroyable using explosives. Except they break if you shoot them. Or story NPCs who don't disappear when they're supposed to, like Heather and Ned. If the world state stuff is stored in the xml files, perhaps the bugs could be solved - such as objects that should be bulletproof, but aren't.
I would like to tweak stuff like weapon lockers so the player is forced to scrounge for ammo. Maybe even BUY ammo. I'd love to create a mod where the game's economy actually matters. Also, the weapon lockers make vendors redundant. Which is silly. The player should be forced to sell their junk at an actual vendor, found in the yellow zones.
I feel these kind of changes could be accomplished simply by altering the relevant xml files, if they could be decompiled and the game could be made to read the modified versions.
I really like Homefront: The Revolution, and I think it could be made even better with mods. So hopefully someone reads this and can shed some light on the subject.
