Is the game fun, kinda like FC4, playable with first person keyboard and mouse old style? I liked the Left for Dead 2 games and especially the modded maps like "I hate mountains", "Blood tracks" "Detour" and "Suicide Blitz" and so forth even tho they were sorta on tracks in a way. If you kinda liked the original maps of L4D2, those are twice as good, which is unusual in gaming, whereas Valve is kinda special in providing support for modding. Just a blurp from someone who played Dying Light after it was fully developed and retail version would be appreciated, I know there was a buddy here that helped develop that prob knows better than most the fun it contains.
EDIT: IT IS A GLORIOUS GAME. I AM SOLD. IT IS JUST AS EVERYONE SAID AND MORE. NOT FOR EVERYONE, GOTTA LIKE PLANNING AHEAD AND GETTING FRUSTRATED BY "CLUNKY" WEAPONS AND EQUIPMENT SELECTION AND UPGRADING SYSTEMS AS WELL AS INTERCHANGING IN THE FIELD. I DID LIKE THE SHOWING OF POWER OF WEAPON BEFORE YOU PICK IT UP, . BUT IT IS MY VOTE FOR GAME OF YEAR IN MY BOOK, SO FAR, ABOUT 30 HOURS INTO IT. :)
PS: SORRY BONTAINER, IT IS NOT AVAILABLE WHERE YOU ARE
Jan 31, 2016 UPDATE: SPOILER ALERT: Have played 588 hours, died 1223 times (brave?), ran 2848km, grappled 148km, killed 41,119 infected, 670 Rias' men, Picked 7,453 locks. Last part of game called Extraction at end is ridiculus, takes too many tries, can't see what I am doing, frustrating beyond belief, not worth doing, I just went to a runthru and found that I didn't miss anything, but may have to do that last part inorder to get to some goodies, tho. Accumalated 10million bucks. Must have 10,000 gauze pads, heh. String is what you want to collect from trash cans, need them to make molotovs. Super excellent game. Go for red boxes to open if have choice. Keep more expensive weapons and drop or dismantle cheap ones when you run out of room and have no store to sell to. Wait till you get 1200 damage weapons before trying too many quests. Weapon systems for upgrading and selecting is well thought out once you play a hundred hours or so. Get weapons with highest durability and damage, 100 handling is ok, normal, look for Gold color which is tops, or second Purple. Always try to run around fights. Kill Demolishers using "Freeze Stars or Grenades" then throw axes or swords into them, which multiplies the damage they have from swinging. Molotovs best weapon for throwing and Modern throwing axe. I seldom if ever used firearms except at first, as they draw Volatiles to you with noise. Try to use takedowns to save swords at first while acculating weapons.
RE-EDIT: It is getting better now that I have double the time or triple perhaps. Weapons management could be quicker, but is more realistic if you think that you are trying to retrieve the weapon from backpack which requires more time than from holstered items. Still sold on game and is much quicker paced than FC4, so more tiring I think. Concept of blades and bats and hammers being more useful than rifles and pistols interesting and makes sense that the noise would be a hazard. Would be cool tho to have one surpressor, in a realistic mode, ie, smaller circle of detection than full sound. Weapons retrevial makes sense now, as some are in backpack and take longer to access. Picking them up is a problem for me because I think it is cause I use single click regularly in windows and somehow it is a difference with hold or double click. I have it worked out well to my satisfaction.
Seems to be well thought out and full of surprizes that make one go: "didn't see that one coming"!
Aug 13 2015 RE-RE-Edit: Confirmed, double quick click of "use" key to pick up weapon and add to backpack, hold click of "use" key to swap weapon with held weapon. User problem as usual with me.... heh. Your mileage may vary. I have set single click for windows. Game size is slightly smaller than Far Cry 4 IMHO, but denser with items to make it seem about the same distance. Steep learning curve exciting and enthralling. Very different in that firearms are used infrequently, due to drawing faster recently changed zombies to noises, and they are a bit of a nuisance to regulate.
Aug 31 2015 RE-RE-aw nevermind. Thank you Mike for the heads up on this game. I would not have known much about it. I have maybe 200 hours and am still finding new stuff, will dive down deep where some stuff should be, and lo and behold, there is stuff, even prizes for the taking, heh. I have a feeling I will be playing this for a while. All of my previous reservations are evaporated, just my inexperience, the crew put in a LOT of time in this game making it roll easy. Very deep game, has legs. I recommend for adults who don't mind zombies. Plays very smooth on medium high rig.

From what I saw I think it felt very inspired by Far Cry 3 & 4. It still looks a lot like Dead Island (if you ever played those), but there looks like more changes that seem far cry-ish indeed. Sort of a zombie themed Far Cry is what I was thinking. I'm *this* close to buying it and if Witcher hadn't come out I woulda broke down and got it.
Maybe the guys who have played it can offer their thoughts? Ceano has quite a few mods he made for it too...

I'm currently in my second play thru of DL, and enjoying the heck out of it - which I wasn't sure I would at first (not a lets-kill-zombie game fan). However, the freedom of movement (Parkour) in an open world as a FP it great. The key binding is so much better than FC3 & -4. The save system however sucks - you have to really manage your specific location and what "activity" is currently active when you wish to exit the game. If one is thinking about getting the game, I do recommend taking a look at this serious walk through to get an idea of how to really enjoy the game: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWfn8XPMjoaMWnxHL4BbMjqmKDe9UF_zVIt's Major Slack attack videos, and quite frankly he does a walk through correctly. I most likely will start again, looking at some of the cool mods that have been developed. The interface (and updates/patches) are such a refreshing change to the mangled approached we've experienced by Ubisoft.

Nice videos! OK so I broke down and bought it. I need this like another hole in my head, but I really have wanted to try it for a while now. I got it on sale for $24.00 from this site: www.g2play.net/catalogsearch/result/index/?q=dying+lightYou could also pick up the DLC, season pass, etc. all on sale and much lower than anywhere else at this time. CAVEAT EMPTOR - I am neither recommending nor condemning G2Play.net. They've had some unpopular press in the past with some people saying they have had problems with their keys being revoked by steam or the publisher or whomever. There was a lot of gray area about whether that site should be allowed to sell keys (I assume they buy them in bulk from whatever country is the cheapest or work the system some other way). At any rate *I personally* have not had any issues with any keys that I bought there (which admittedly were few and far between). I'm not to worried about it personally, but I can certainly understand if anyone would shy away or not want to take the risk, etc.

Yeah, the videos by Slack do a good job in giving you an idea of how to go about enjoying (i.e., getting the most out of) a game - plus are very entertaining (which is a requirement for YouTube viewing).
My approach as to take a much slower pace (as I also do in the Far Cry series) in order to build up the skill sets earlier and to explore the map just to see if there are other approaches/methods to accomplish certain tasks. One aspect I've really enjoyed is searching for looting locations where should provide the best changes for obtaining the better weapons (as well as upgrades for the weapons) - either to sell or to use.
The vanilla game has plenty to offer in the way of replay opportunities simply based on various approaches a player may wish to employ once you step out of the tower for the first time and all you have is a wooden table leg as a weapon ...

Here are my initial impressions after playing for a few hours (note I am very early into the game maybe only 2%-5% of the campaign story). Mostly this is a comparison of Dying Light vs Far Cry 3 & 4:
1) Movement feels good. Very Far Cry in the way he hauls himself up on ledges, etc. Early gameplay allows you to avoid enemies quite handily by using verticality. I can see how later this will become more challenging as they introduce various kinds of more dangerous zombies (fast rage induced ones that chase you down and horrific tentacled faced things that come out at night)
There is stamina so you can't run / jump forever. You can rank this as you level your guy plus craft herbal brews (very much like Far Cry syringes) to pump you up for short durations.
2) Zombie play is great. Very classic stuff where you can both easily avoid and easily find yourself outflanked and overwhelmed by lots of slow dumb rotters. The game rewards using the environment so there's all sorts of ways to send zombies tumbling into spikes, fire, off ledges, etc. Good stuff. Hitting zombies in the head is always the way to go (of course). Unfortunately early weapons are incredibly weak and you are sometimes bashing over and over again until you get a lucky squishy crit along with exquisite exploding head splatter. I'm sure once you level your character and get crazy over the top electrified twin katanas or whatever most common enemies will be nothing more than a nuisance.
There are human enemies (bandit types) who are a lot more crafty and will make you work hard as they dodge your blows and deflect items you try to throw at them.
Quite obviously there are mini bosses (and presumably regular bosses) with much more health and punch. Giant zombies, bloated exploding zombies, hazmat wearing zombies, police zombies, etc. etc. so there will always be something to challenge you. And night. Bejebus night is freaking terrifying.
3) Main player voice acting is great. He feels much better, but very similar to Jason/Ajay. Classic hero type (in U.S. we would call him an All American Hero), but it's nice to play a character who is meant to be a competent soldier instead of someone who fell into the situation. There's not so much disconnect between the character saying one thing ("but I've never shot anyone before") and then you suddenly becoming Rambo 2 minutes later. This guy is meant to know how to fight so it feels ok that you are good at zombie hunting.
There's also a "secret mission" type of thing going on with the campaign story that is intriguing. No idea if the game keeps up a good story, but the hours I put in where defiantly interesting and very well written.
4) Crafting! Lots of various weapons and gear to construct out of duct tape, nails and the like. You spend a lot of time scrounging for old cell phones and digging through trash and various containers. It all works simply and eloquently.
An interesting idea they incorporate is "survivors vision" where instead of everything glowing by default you press a key (for example Q) to send out a sonar like ping around you which highlights usable and searchable objects. I like this decision as it allows you to choose whether you want the handholding or not. If you hate the idea you can always unbind the key and never use it. IMO this is a good improvement over the Far Cry series of forced hand holding.
5) Weapons focus is almost exclusively melee weapons, but I've seen that later game play includes guns and even possibly bow/crossbow. Ammo is surely going to be hard to obtain and make. The game really wants you to fight hand to hand and use parkour to defeat of escape more difficult opponents.
6) Open world. Just as in Far Cry you have a wide open world where you can take main story missions, side missions or various other activities. You have full control over what you do.
While there are no outposts per se to takeover there are difficult guarded areas of stuff to tempt you. There are safehouses you can clear of zombies and you do a few other minor tasks to get them up and running (close the front gate, switch on the lights, etc). These safe houses have bedrolls/cots/sleeping bags that allow you to sleep through the day or night very similar to the Far Cry (although I don't think you can choose how many hours specifically to rest for - he does wear a wrist watch, but I've yet to figure out how to get him to look at it)
There are also radio towers to climb which is nearly identical in fashion to FC.
7) Final thoughts - I really dig this game. It manages to encompass SOME of the best aspects of Far Cry and expand upon them. Obviously the Far Cry series is superior in gunplay and in stealth outpost/stronghold missions. On the other hand Dying Light feels like it has a better movement and melee combat system and it's a superior "horror survival" game.
Far Cry has wilderness and hunting (though no true survival elements). Dying light has cities and looting (still no thrist/hunger/sleep requirements but dangerous zombie infested environment).
I don't think Dying Light will REPLACE Far Cry for me, but it definitely belongs in my library next to it. I very well think of it as Far Cry's second cousin. Great game. I highly recommend it even with so little gameplay under my belt.

No chance for me, the game is locked in Germany, and Steam won`t even show it. So even with a key I couldn`t install it.

Regarding Crane's ability to view his watch w/o the player bringing up the menu - with a melee weapon, press the RMB (default), and his left arm also comes into view - as a counter balance to raising his weapon as if to either throw or power attack (two acquired skills) - you see the watch on the left wrist.

Relating to the day/night cycle; i.e., how much time before dark to get something done - one of the mods I'll be looking at is the one where you the player set the length of that cycle. By default both day/night are too short for my default style of play. I can understand why the developers decided on such short lengths, but it forces to a certain extent a specific style of play. More than once I get the notice from the tower, and it just seems like I've only done a small amount of roaming. And, again, with the save design system, I do need to sure which activity is currently "active", and my specific location if I'm going to exit the game at that point.

Rats. Sorry Bontainer. What is it with Germany and blood in video games? It is a governemt agency called the "Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien" (only we germans can form such ungainly wordconstructs) and it has the power to force games below the counter. Its not censorship, it only forbids the sale AND marketing to minors, which in itsself isn`t such a bad idea. But since no company wants to go through the hassle of age control they just don`t sell those games. Especially for Steam it is a problem, because just by the fact that they list the game, they do market it and could get in trouble. And since I buy my games only via Steam its impossible to get the game here. I could order the DVD via Austria, but then I have all the hassle with upgrades, etc, etc. so I just leave it out...

Hiya guys, thanks a bunch Mike and JR, sorry Bontainer about not being able to get the game there. I will get it soon as a deal comes my way thru Steam. Sounds good and the videos were great. Watching the Gkids 12 hours a day now all summer, it is a blessing. Trying to get used to being caregiver again, heh. I think I yam gonna need an escape in a few weeks anyway.... just kidding.
Does sound like and look like my kinda game.

>Does sound like and look like my kinda game.
I think it definitely might be T. Although you should know that the game expects you to do a lot more jumping around than Far Cry does. There still some room to do stealthy stuff, but it's nerve wracking (damn zombies coming outta nowhere LOL) and it's harder to pull off then just keeping up high away from the biters. I'm anxious for a long range weapon even though it's not a guns heavy game. You can craft a variety of throwables so I use those when I get a hankering for sniping at zombies heh. And one cannot dismiss that standing on a bus roof and using fire crackers + molotov is a glorious bit of fun.
I dunno about letting the kids play/see. It has a lot of gore and a fair amount of cussin'. Some dramatic moments in the game involving young kids and their parents as well. Wouldn't want any little guys to be upset that a child in the game might be lost, scared, can't find his mommy/daddy etc.

Thanks for the warning about the little ones.. I did let him play some maps and episodes in Far Cry 4 that I previewed first, tho the little rascal was watching them on Utube at his house and finding out about stuff before me. I let him do a outpost takeover and the little dude takes over a fortress, yeah, when he was six. Tells me, Papa, I saw how to do it on Utube..... I just shakes me head..... and to top it off, no alarms either, and as I recall, he got the next fortress undetected. I was very concerned about Far Cry 3 with that Ass Buck and his buddies, really kept my eye on those parts so he wouldn't get that far to see any of the set scenes movies, interactions, or dumb ass knife fights.
I wouldn't want to be the cause of any nightmares, that would make me sick. I don't think he is gonna be able to ever play any of "Dying Light" at all, at least here, what with the gore and scary scenes.
Really liking the idea of it. Left for Dead 2 was great, had an open feel, tho was on big rails, heh. You really couldn't roam the countryside so much as trek around from one area to another as planned by coder, but was terrific for scary stuff, had squirts I swear a few times, just the shock value, like Ka-Boom, dayr he is, a Smoker Zombie with his tongue around your neck pulling you away from your buddies who don't know you are being dragged thru the dark forest and up a cliff..... forgotten by all, not so much scary looking things, my imagination is better than most games.
G2Play.com seems like too good to be true. Would love to save some money, in fact, is the only way I can justify buying is on sale somewhere. Will check them out, thanks very much for the little warning blip, good show.
Thanks to all who contributed to the education of those of us curious about "Dying Light" and its playability.
