Found a place I could get FCP for $30.00 and hemmed and hawed over it. I really didn't want to pay more than $20.00... was really even thinking of just skipping it completely, but then as if a sign from beyond my tax return money suddenly appeared in my bank account so I went ahead and just bought the damn thing.
Mixed bag of emotions. It's different. I'm only an hour in so that's really not any time to make valid judgments. I know the story will likely be stale, the animals a retread of 3 & 4 and I'm sure the difficulty will be laughable, but still it's a different experience. And I suppose it's a Far Cry even if in just name only...
Takeaways for me at the moment -
1) Night and lighting in general seems really well done. Not too dark but far darker than FC3 or 4. I would have liked pitch black (and maybe there are areas like that), but such a simple thing as lowering the light level and having proper colored skies makes the game seem so much better.
2) Oros/Kyrat is well done. There's more geographic features because there's less structures and manmade stuff. I like this terrain more than FC4 I think. The ground cover can make spotting small animals tough. Which is good
I still miss my various ways of getting around, but you know what I don't miss? Accidentally triggering the damn wingsuit when I hop down a hill LOL
Remove fast travel and limit the ability to use beastmaster pets and this game would be a pretty amazing hunting game.
3) The HUD is even better adapted than v1.10 There's (unbelievably) more options to turn things on or off. Me thinks the dev team might have taken a cue or two from our complaints and modifications. You can really drill down on turning off a variety of things which is good. Completely hudless is both immersive and scary.
4) Crafting is well executed at my low level. I find myself scrounging for stuff (especially wood) so I can make more arrows and clubs. This will undoubtedly get silly easy quickly like all Far Cry games, but I enjoy the system they've created for this. Without cash and stores crafting has significance. Well done.
5) Animals are still annoyingly crafty bastards who attack at the most inopportune moments. Fuck you animals. Just fuck you.
I'm clearly not ready to go completely HUDless yet...
6) I found a deer stuck inside of a boulder. Oh Far Cry you never fail to entertain.
7) Cutscenes are finally skippable. WTF it took 5 games to finally get this!? Oh well at least they did it.
8) Subtitles are just as annoying as you thought they would be.
9) Ubisoft changed the .dat file compression scheme. NO MODS unless/until Rick updates his tools (if he can). I reached out to him. He may do this if/when he gets the game.
I'll play it some more this weekend and see how I feel say in 10 hours instead of just 1.
