Can anyone remember who the picture is of I yam using as my AVATOR?
He was the Minister of Information for Sadam Hussein (Propoganda Expert Gulf War 1.0)
He was the biggest liar in history, I think. He was reporting they were in charge of the Baghdad Airport when CNN was showing allied tanks running all the way thru the joint and making loops thru Baghdad downtown on the freeways. God bless General Swartzkopft!
I added the medals, the gold one is for highest rating for Commander in the old Battlefield II game, the other I think was the lower ranking for commander, the clan I was in you couldn't help but get points as commander in game. Just let me know if anyone is offended, I will take it down and put a regular pic in.

Yep, I still remember the playing cards, and wondered why you chose this ID. Mine is a Sword I in fact own, Its an Oakeshott XII type, and I can`t get it from rusting, so if anyone has a tip, I would welcome it.... (especially how to get rid of the rust).

At the time I chose it as avator, he was so ridiculous to us in clan with his rants it was bordering on comedy, tho the war was serious business and nothing to joke about, I had friends there supporting Desert Storm. I had a problem with commanding in the game BFII, as you had to select the enemy players from satellite views and each time you did, it would yell "Enemy Spotted", and would bother some, so I had to find another way to point out the enemy troops, and his rants were compared to my charactor pointing out the players.
I have the same type problem, with the steel sword, I have a bayonet about the same size, tho curved downward at end I think so bullet if slow wouldn't hit bayonet, it was for Remington Rolling Block rifle, used by Danish Coast Guard, circa 1900 or so, that is all I could find out about it. I lent it to someone who I believe tried to brighten it, tho it had a beautiful chromelike finish before, and when I got it back, it was dull gray finish. But is still in good condition, not quite as nice as the one you have there. I have not tried brass-o or steel wool or even brass wire wheel on drill yet, but perhaps someday, I am concerned it might make it worse.
I have used naval jelly, the pink stuff, on bicycles in the past for escellent effect, to rid rust, tho I would not recommend it to you, for that nice sword as it is better for chrome or mild steel, and it may be what dulled the finish on my bayonet, as it works like an acid. I know that Japanese swordmakers use special rocks as manual grindstones to make a unique finish and hone on their creations, but I would recommend talking to someone who restores swords to give a way to brighen the finish.
IF that is a leather holder, I have found boot cream from Propet's to be a good preservative and conditioner for leather, tho test a small area if you do try it.
My bayonet is surprisingly to me very heavy. Just kinda swinging it {very very carefully} gets the muscles tired quickly. I bought it for 12usd when I was 12, prob about 95usd today.
EDIT: Just saw your quote signature, from "Blade Runner". Was best part of film, Rudger Hauer (sp?) was great in that, his best role.

Takeout's avatar - dang I was too slow and missed the first one (Bagbob). The new one's pretty funny tho. If I hadn't just had my head buzzcut my hair probably looked like that LOL!
Sword rust - I would like to know this too. Father in law passed on some blades to me which I have bestowed on to my son. Mostly just old cavalry sabers (sheath rattlers). Now they are just collecting rust and dust (like me) out in the garage. Have them wrapped up in plastic tarp, but always been afraid to try and clean them since the "experts" always say don't try to clean your antiques as it just ruins them. I know very little about old steel so been afraid to mess it up. Would like to have them shiny for the boy someday if he ever takes an interest...
Tannhäuser gate - love the movies (of course) and Rutger. Read once that line was ad libbed by him or at least parts like the c-beams and Ridley Scott liked it so much he kept it. Good call because it's a sci-fi classic line (and scene).

Bladerunner was and is one of my favourite movies, ever. The Syd Mead designs, the 40ies style clothing, and the overall atmossphere haven´t lost a bit of their appeal with the years. If it wouldn´t be for all the CRT screens the movie could have been made yesterday. Rutger`s acting was the absolute highlight of his career. Strangely enough I seem to be one of the few people who liked the voice over version that came into the cinemas, best. Maybe because I was a huge fan of film noir in those days. Especially the Raymond Chandler flics (Philip Marlowe) who take much of their appeal from the brilliant writing style of Chandler. The absolute best of them is "Farwell my Lovely" starring Robert Mitchum as Marlowe. To anyone who has not seen that movie - get it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpIftdXefsEOf course, as always, reading the books of Chandler is preferable. And, since I am just talking about Chandler, listen to this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxS-ICzjO6I

To Mike: Yes, I believe you are correct, as close as I can recall, he was the dude they called "Baghdad Bob" that the world couldn't determine whether the was a propoganda expert or a satire comedian, tho in a war, ain't much funny, tho I think his idiotic pronouncements were helping our side in the war of minds. He had a half smile when reporting, kinda like a miscongenital Mona Lisa thing. Like, I know this is bullshit, but just let me find a piper cub airplane out of here, and I won't bother you any more.
JR: The avatar I first used was the same one I used at Ziggy's site on Nexus, it is still there. I had a friend who was passable at Photoshop who actually made it into a three panel .gif that would make his lips and eyebrows move, kinda funny at the time, like anytime he talks, it is a lie, I tried to put it into the panel that way, but the two other panels that made the mini movie didn't shrink like the original, so the eyebrows and lips were moving off to the side when displayed, heh, was funny, but too confusing to post here.
You guys having those swords are lucky. Nice to have artifacts to pass on, I have some from my parents that are more sentimental than actual historical. I agree, unless an expert restores those swords or weapons, it is always best to leave them alone unless they are deteriating. Patina is proof of non-forgery to some. My bayonet is like just a collectors item for casual collection, so I wasn't too peeved when it was returned to me dulled finish and all. It was stamped Soligen, so it was pretty quality steel.
Here in California, as I stated before, ancient is like 200years, not much history from Spanish occupation years, tho we have some artifacts we find occasionally from the native Amerindians like arrowhead stuff or spear points, if you know where to look, like in holes where a squirrel or muskrat holed up after being chased by said Amerindian hunter and he broke off his spear-point and had to vacate before he could extract it, that is where I found a slate spear-point up in the Gold Country near Folsom, in between some boulders. Lost it moving. :{
I will get a pic of me to use for avatar if I can find one of just me, seems like I am so lucky that every pic of me has my Grand-prodegeny along side, and that is a good thing. I guess younger ones wouldn't understand not taking "selfies" ever. I prob would if my arms were longer. Oh well, this will do till I get my daughter to take one for me.
Bontainer:I have watched "Blade Runner" perhaps five times, prob would watch it even more, but take it in doses, don't want to ever get tired of it. I was never into movies much except as teen I read every novel of James Bond series that Ian Flemming wrote (this was before VHS, even).
Heh, HE (Rutger's bionic charactor) is one dude that can use the phrase "you people", as in the phrase signature, with utter righteousness, unlike one contender for President here in USA that made that mistake when referring to black people, tho I thought it was overblown by media, just a simple mistake in terminology.
The whole ambiance of the "Blade Runner" was so well done with the mists and international culture type crowd scenes, could really figure it was far into future, tho best miss of future was from "Back to the Future" for American films, which was supposed to be 1985 going to 2015, heh, they missed by a wide margin, with the flying cars, fuel sources, hoverboards etc. I don't recall what year "Blade Runner" was set in, hope like 2090 or so, cause the references to those distant sites like "Orion's Shoulder" would be difficult to achieve, unless he was just referring to the alignment of stars as a direction, which would be acceptable to me as that is what we do today.
I agree about CRT screens giving away the year of production. Having voice command zooming in with resolution enhancement was sorta neat, but on a CRT? Someone didn't do their homework, excusable tho it was, it would seem voice control is so slow, almost any control is quicker than voice control, imagine flying a fast jet with voice control, heh, I should imagine it would crash quickly. Now, mental control is different, hook up into nerve bundles in the wrists, say, like in some book about future where they used solar sails and used nerve systems inter-connecters to control the quasi-material hundred km sail to best capture drive froce from photons. Asminov, Harrison? forget.
I detested Robert Michum as every charactor he played more than any other actor, that I saw, was just evil it seems. Not saying I don't watch his movies, just an opinion of emotion. I guess that is a compliment to his ability to bring out that emotion, he is probably a good enough guy if you meet him in person, just his manner as acting those parts.
I will give that movie "Farewell, My Lovely" a watch, don't get many recommendations about good movies lately from peeps I trust. I thought the recent "Book of Eli" (?) movie was excellent, incredible as it seemed about the main surprize at end. Won't ruin it for those not seen it yet. Can't think of a movie with Denzel Washington in it I didn't like, he must be really picky about what he plays in, must have been financially well off before starting career. Don't remember the name of the one with the evil spirit that changed people hosts fast, that was good.
Listened to parts of the song, good stuff, will listen to whole thing when in right mood sometime and have time, have two top hits of Dire Straights on my car CD I listen to, the song about South London bar musicians "Sultans of Swing", one of my all time favorites, as I am sure others as well. "Money for Nothing" of course. Good guitars.
