Knowing we all have different approaches to engaging the environment within Far Cry, thought I'd mention something I like to do in both 3 & 4:
When you can get a MG-equipped jeep/truck, with only the NPC driver, quickly jump into the back and take off for parts unknown. To date this opportunity appears to make itself available more in 3 than 4, at least in my experiences of playing both.
It's normally a spur of the moment decision; with a quick manual save, and off we go, into bandit country !!
It's very interesting what the game can throw at the player.

I've done that; though it's not a tactic I'm real crazy about, due to the incompetent and frequently erratic NPC driving. More often than not; I'm already on the gun, waiting for victims to come by, when the NPC climbs into the drivers seat drives a short distance before encountering the enemy; then driving us over a cliff, or getting us stuck. One of the things I modded in 3 was the rate of NPC encounters (cranked 'em up 2.5 X over vanilla) and their spawn distance from me (increased it from 100 to 200 meters from me, because I hated having them spawn into the game so close I could see it). Anyway, I get a LOT more enemy and friendly NPC encounters, and enemy reinforce themselves under attack much quicker and in heavier concentrations. Makes for interesting rides as you describe (that and going over the cliff! LOL!).

Having done a few more "hop into the back" last night, I have to agree - sometimes how the NPC driver reacts isn't the most logical ...
When they stay on the road and do a "patrol" type spin in the area, that's most interesting to me in how the game reacts.
In 3 I will take an unmanned truck, and head out to a natural choke point in pirate/merc controlled areas, and set up my own road block. With Ziggy's mod it's great on the south island when you visit early, as basically if you do nothing but acquire the fourth holster slot, there's hardly any friendly NPCs running around, getting in the way.
