Took a brief look at it over at IGN last night......................then crossed it off my list. I'll probably regret missing the game world, because, bless 'em.................Ubi consistently does great game worlds. Then **** it up by prematurely releasing an ill developed title that needs 7-10 patches to operate properly. That , and it's modding/modder non support make it a non player for me. Burning me (amongst thousands of others) with Watch Dogs and 10 patch FC 4 (thank the gaming gods I passed on AssCreed Unity, or I'd have gotten smoked on that too) in 2014 weren't great customer retention techniques.
Did I mention it doesn't have any guns, or explosives??!! What??? They should have incorporated some sort of time travel element to the story line! And a zombie mode, of course!
I will theorize that you guys who like the bow throwing knives part of FC 4 might like FCP as it's all about prehistoric bows, arrows, spears, and who wouldn't like leaping on a saber toothed tigers back with only flint knife clenched between their teeth. Take that feline scum!
I've… seen things you people wouldn't believe… Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those… moments… will be lost in time, like tears… in… rain.
I watched more videos on it, but I just can't get into it. Initially I was excited, but nervous. I mean they are gouging out HUGE sections of the game that actually work well and look good - firefights, vehicles, explosions, etc. and playing up the gimmicky stuff.
The owl thing and the beastmaster stuff seems like another casual "push button to win" implementation.
"Your at the bottom of the food chain. Everything wants to kill you!" - you mean unless I toss some meat at the carnivore and then pet his qwet lil' head with the triangle button right? Then he's my best-est friend ever!
"This is Far Cry like you've never seen it! The first time man stuck a stick in the ground and claimed land for his own!". Awesome! Oh man look there's a... blue plant... but at least it's a different kind of blue plant and oh a Mammoth... uhhh it looks a lot like the elephants actually... OH hey is that an eagle attacking and carrying away a boar? Ummm and that's a badger. Like literally man that's the same badger I fought in Far Cry 4... and a tiger and a panther and a deer... wait what the fuck man where are the "prehistoric beasts?". SABRETOOTH! Yeah I mean that's cool but is there like a giant sloth or NOPE SABRETOOTH! Yeah I get it a sabretooth tiger, but I mean this is a primal land with all kinds of extinct critters so shouldn't GIANT OWL! okkk I don't think you get what I mean SABRETOOTH! sigh fuck it man.
I'm going to be brutally honest - my opinion is this was in tandem development with Far Cry 4 sharing assets and code. There's a LOT here that looks remarkably familiar. Far Cry 4 didn't take enough plunge away from 3 and as much as I welcome a new setting the fact that people aren't climbing the Ubi walls right now screaming WTF RESKIN UBI is astounding to me. From the alpha footage it quite frankly looks like they took Kyrat and stripped away the buildings and vehicles, swapped the Royal Army with neanderthals, and slapped some fur on a few of the animals. There's nothing here that screams innovation.
Oh they removed radio towers. Cool. That's innovation huh - remove a bunch of stuff. Remove multiplayer (sure fine). Remove map editor (well I guess not sure why though - other than there's a whole hell of a lot less assets top build a map with). So what are they replacing all of this with? Cool CO-OP? Nope.
So lets talk about the two things that COULD save Primal (but won't) - survival and stealth. Survival straight up doesn't appear in any of the footage. There's nothing anywhere that indicates you need to worry about food, water or shelter except POSSIBLY shelter will be required to unlock some character abilities - i.e. build your tribe. That aspect might actually be cool - building a tribe and having an AI hunting pack. Maybe. Remember this is Far Cry AI we are talking about here.
Stealth. Well I've seen darker nights and caves which is AWESOME. I've always tried to mod that in and been unsuccessful at it. Felt like darkness was terrible in the last two games. BUT then I see all of the ridiculous pet spamming and Giant Owl gunships. Guys are taking out camps with even engaging any one. This is the silly "sniper OP" exploit all over again only now it's crazy pet exploit. I wanted to feel scared for my life, but what's to be scared of in this game?
Sorry I want to LOVE this game. I do. Far Cry is a special franchise to me, but EVERY design decision here looks completely dumb to me. This game doesn't look difficult nor fun... hell it doesn't even really look "different". Sadly I think it's a travesty to ask $60 for this. I know I'm jumping the gun and prejudging a lot, but I'm really tired of trying to defend this game to myself. Blood Dragon embraced it's insanity and it didn't try to be anything other than the joke parody game it was. This game is full on LYING about what it is and it's kind of insulting to guys like us who are diehard fans.
I won't say I won't buy it. I won't even say I won't like it, but I have serious MASSIVE doubts about it and kind of just don't have the desire right now to bother with it. I hope my opinion changes. I know I will NOT pay anywhere near full price for it. No way.
Oh - actually the bow play looks pretty good. I do give it that, but they would have to work hard to f#$k up the one thing that's generally been pretty consistent with the last few games.
Well. I AM pretty disappointed with what I've seen so far for Primal. I really hoped the franchise would take the core game to somewhere else exotic in the modern world. OR at least if Primitive then go full bore and add a completely new set of unseen creatures and places. Give me Weird Fantasy Primal or Harsh Realistic Primal not Kyrat without Guns Primal. Sigh. Maybe Far Cry 6.
Having said that I still have a lot of hope that Homefront or Ghost Recon: Wild Lands will fill that niche for me (and you guys) until we get a proper Far Cry exploda-ganza

I have gotten so used to using machetes and swords, with Dying Light, I might as well get going on spears and Atlais (sp?) and bows. Dying Light really is refreshing with it's system of upgrading weapons and health status. I was very skeptical at first, but would vote DL as game of year at this time. Still playing thru.
I am like golfer who likes to get into the rough so much he shoots for ponds and trees. IF Primal comes anywhere close to Dying Light in playablity and fun I will probably buy it after a month or so of waiting for patches to fix the game to playability mode. And let JRavens and friends get their coding paws on it for a bit, unless his company thinks up new ways to take him away from us, heh.
PS: Notice how short my post is? My new meds are working I think.... heh.
